Good Morning Nigeria! Here are a few of what you need to know this Thursday morning 🙂. Enjoy!
1. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday reportedly defended the siege of the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). According to the APC, the DSS was taken to prevent alleged plot by Senate President Bukola Saraki to incite violence. The statement was issued by Mr. Yekini Nabena, the National Publicity Secretary of the party in Abuja. The party’s latest statement contradicts its earlier position over the DSS invasion on Tuesday. “Following Tuesday’s incident at the National Assembly, our investigations have now uncovered the sinister plot hatched by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, to foment violence in the legislative chamber all in a bid to stop his impeachment. Our investigations uncovered and noted the following: We are now aware that the timely intervention of the security operatives forestalled the planned violence which could have led to possible deaths, injuries, and destruction of property in the National Assembly on Tuesday,” the statement read. The Tuesday incident also got the Director General of the DSS, Lawal Daura, fired by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
2. Senator Godswill Akpabio, the former Senate Minority Leader, on Wednesday defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The former Akwa Ibom State Governor had on Sunday visited President Muhammadu Buhari in London, United Kingdom. He also met with the National Chairman of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday in Abuja all in preparation for his formal defection to the ruling party. Four (4) lawmakers, two (2) commissioners also dumped the PDP and joined Akpabio.
3. The National Chairman of the ruling APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium in Akwa Ibom, during the formal defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio from the PDP to APC, alleged that some senators and members of the National House of Representatives were planning to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari. He however warned the plotters to drop their plans as it was not possible for a lizard to wrestle an antelope. He noted that the PDP has no vision. “Today, we are aspiring in our vision, but the Peoples Democratic Party has no vision. They believe in sharing and looting the treasury,’’ he said.
