The full-time whistle blows, handing Arsenal a first win of the season.

That’s three straight defeats for West Ham, who were excellent for a spell but tired badly after Issa Diop’s unfortunate own goal.

Not the most convincing display by the Gunners, who still look so frail in defence.

Arsenal secured their first Premier League victory under new head coach Unai Emery thanks in part to an own-goal from West Ham United debutant Issa Diop.

Diop, a £22million signing from Toulouse, was unfortunate to see substitute Alexandre Lacazette’s cross hit him and the ball rebound past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianksi.

Despite a first win, Emery still has plenty of work to do on his Arsenal side and could have an issue regarding Mesut Ozil. The German’s absence from the squad was officially blamed on illness but unconfirmed reports emerged during the game that he had been left out following a training ground row with his boss.

A third successive defeat meant West Ham are still searching for their first point of the season under their own new manager Manuel Pellegrini, but there was encouragement to be taken from a game in which they took the lead.

Felipe Anderson caused the Arsenal defence big problems all afternoon from the number 10 position and it was the Brazilian who set up captain Marko Arnautovic to open the scoring.

Anderson ran with the ball and exchanged a couple of passes with Arnautovic to pull Shkodran Mustafi out of position, before the former Stoke City forward unleashed a shot past Petr Cech.

The strike meant Arnautovic, who was handed the armband because Mark Noble missed out through injury, has been involved in 14 Premier League goals in 2018, which is a record only bettered by Mohamed Salah so far.

Emery needed his team to respond quickly and they did, as Nacho Monreal was at the back post five minutes later to control a Hector Bellerin pass and smash the ball into the net.

That should have given the home team momentum, but it was West Ham who finished the first half better. Cech first saved from Michail Antonio and then Robert Snodgrass should have scored after he was found free in the penalty area.

Emery responded by sending on Lacazette in place of Alex Iwobi for the second half and the switch worked. It was the substitute who immediately produced a cross from which Mustafi almost scored.

And with 20 minutes remaining, Lacazette produced the cross from which Diop marked his debut with an own goal. The central defender replaced Angelo Ogbonna at the back and produced a terrible attempted clearance by sending the ball straight into the air.

It eventually dropped for Lacazette and he managed to send the ball back into the area on the turn and Diop watched in despair as it bounced off him and past Fabianksi.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have eased Arsenal’s nerves by quickly adding a third, but his replacement, substitute Danny Welbeck, made sure of the three points from Bellerin’s cross in time added on for stoppages.

No time at all for West Ham to respond with even a consolation goal.

Summary

Arsenal have lost one of their last 22 matches against West Ham
West Ham have conceded 74 Premier League goals since start of last season, more than any other team
