APC BENUE STATE
PRESS STATEMENT BY GOVERNORSHIP ASPIRANTS ON THE PLATFORM OF THE APC ON THE STATE AFFAIRS OF THE STATE.
We the governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress heartily welcome you all to this press conference. We thank God Almighty for this opportunity and unreservedly express our profound appreciation to the leader of our party, Distinguished Senator George Akume, the entire leadership of the party, and its teaming supporters and the suffering people of Benue State whom we aspire to serve.
Benue State has had its fair share of leadership misfortune, but never in the history of the State has it been this bad.
Never have we had such heightened decline in living standards. Never have we had such incompetence and incapacity in leadership. Never has poverty so brazenly shared residence with our people. But under the leadership of Governor Samuel Ortom, the Benue people now live practically like paupers.
We wish to place on record that the APC gave Governor Ortom the platform on a platter of gold, upon which he became Governor of the State.
This was after he lost woefully in the primaries of the party to which he has now ingloriously returned. This attitude is a clear manifestation that Ortom cannot be trusted. A man, who in desperation promises everything while lying and defaming the name of God, is not someone who can be trusted.
Governor Ortom’s administration has received over N500 billion from the federal treasury by way of Federal Allocations, grants, Paris Club refunds and many other accruable revenues due to the state in the last three and half years. Despite this huge sum, Benue has nothing to show for it. We surely cannot allow this to continue. Posterity will not forgive us if we do not, individually and collectively, rise up against this evil perpetrated against our people, while using the name of God as a decoy.
This is a duty we must perform. His deliberate refusal to pay salaries and pensions even after receiving such humungous funds attests to this wickedness.
The Benue people also need to know that Governor Ortom is deeply implicated in the security situation in the state, which he continues to use as a ploy for sympathy and siphoning state funds in the name of security. Do not be deceived, Ortom is the architect of the insecurity in the state.
The revelations arising from the recent arrest of his cousin Tashaku, attests to this fact.
Despite these, we call on the Benue people not to despair. Our party the APC is on a rescue mission and seeks your support to retrieve Benue State from the jaws of this vile, incompetent, corrupt and evil leadership. As a party, we believe first in the well being of our people and their desire to meet their aspirations.
We acknowledge the suffering that Ortom and his incompetence have unleashed on our people and we are determined to bring this misfortune to an end.
As we approach our party primaries to pick candidates at all levels to prepare for the general elections, we call on every Benue citizen to ask and provide an answer, in good conscience, to one pertinent question; “Are you satisfied with the present state of affairs in the state? The answer is definitely a resounding NO!
On our part, specifically we the governorship aspirants here seated, we pledge to ensure a peaceful and family-like primary elections that will produce a credible and generally acceptable flag bearer for our party. We are aware that the party on its part has pledged to provide a level playing field for all aspirants so as to ensure a free, fair, credible and transparent process that is acceptable to all. It is only such a process that will guarantee a rancor-free outcome. And we shall support whoever emerges amongst us through such a process.
We will join such a flag bearer to vigorously campaign in order to finally chase out the enemy of our people masquerading as their governor.
To the Benue people we make this pledge: whoever emerges amongst us and goes on to become the governor of Benue state shall restore this state to its lost glory. We are committed to ensuring that Benue is returned to the path of progress, development and peace.
This is our pledge and this we promise our people.
Thank you all.
God Bless Benue State.
God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria
