That’s it! Man City get their three points. Newcastle put a bit of a fight, in the same way that Anthony Joshua’s sparring partner does when he fancies a bit of a go. City controlled it from start to finish.

90 mins +2 – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
The ball drops for Gundogan to smash from 20 yards but he swipes at it and blasts the ball into the stand.
AGUERO IS AWAY! It’s an incredible pass from Fernandinho, who splits the defence open after Newcastle give the ball away and then Aguero goes round the goalkeeper but can’t shoot. He turns, looks for an option and then chips the ball straight out for goal kick. It’s not his best work.

90 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
David Silva is replaced by Kompany for the final few minutes. Guardiola’s wary of Newcastle and is switching the shape to a back three as opposed to a two.

88 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
Silva is just offside as he breaks away into the box. Dubravka launches it long and Newcastle win the second ball. Yedlin wriggles away from Sterling, Newcastle keep forcing the ball forward until Ederson can lie on it and stop the move.

86 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
City still in total control of the game. Pep is up and animated on the touchline again, probably worried about the threat of Newcastle grabbing that one sneaky goal and ruining the evening’s work.

84 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
City are kind of reflecting the noise of the crowd here. It’s fairly pedestrian, nothing too exciting, about 60 per cent effort, 3rd gear. You know the drill. Newcastle have switched to a 4-5-1 and pressing higher up the pitch trying to disrupt City’s buildup play.
it’s working too!

81 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
Sterling runs down the centre and City have a three vs three! Sterling’s not sure what to do, passes out to Aguero and there’s not enough weight on it. Lascelles goes in hard and gives Aguero a good dunt, winning the ball in the process.
Clark off, Murphy on for Newcastle. They’re going for it!
79 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
There’s an ever so slight difference between these two teams:
City have a corner. It’s crossed in, headed on and SILVA MIGHT TOUCH IT IN! Dubraka saves. We’re now in the Danger Zone, or as Rafa Benitez will refer to it, the period of the game that Newcastle can actually score in.

77 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
Gundogan is getting ready to come on… and he replaces Riyad Mahrez. 7:04pm

Off comes Rondon to be replaced by Joselu. He scored the equaliser against Chelsea last week! Could we in for a shock ending? I’m not sure it’s on this time.

What a ball. Jeeeeeeez. Mendy picks out Mahrez with a 30 yard pass perfectly executed and controlled like it’s just being handed to him. There’s some incredible talent on the pitch right now.

73 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
That is a mad amount of attacking possession for City. Newcastle hitting long balls up to Rondon, who can’t do anything with them.

71 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
Bernardo has given City much more in attack since coming on. His movement is creating passing options, Aguero has more space to roam into on his own, Newcastle can’t track the constant running… and it’s just all City.
City ping some passes together, Silva pops up on the edge of the box and sets up Sterling for a shot! Wide. He wants a corner but doesn’t get it.

69 mins – Man City 2-1 Newcastle

67 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
SO CLOSE SILVA! The ball is crossed to the back post and he’s found space to head at goal! The angle’s too cute though and he hits the side netting.
66 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
That’s absolutely amazing from City. Newcastle attack, Ederson catches and rolls it out immediately to Bernardo. He sends a brilliant outside of boot pass round the defence to Aguero, who chips to the back post for Fernandinho, his shot is saved, and then Silva follows up but has his shot saved too. Dubravka’s a great shot stopper too while we’re at it.

64 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
Mendy’s delivery from wide is outstanding. He powers them in with accuracy, speed and curl so they draw the goalie out, defenders get fooled and all it needs is a redirect off someone’s head to near-guarantee a goal.

62 mins – Man City 2 Newcastle 1
Walker throws his arms out in annoyance at Mahrez slowing everything down after he burst into life to race up the right wing. Walker seems to realise that City need to up the tempo of the passing to get more goals here while certain individuals like Mahrez are taking too long with the ball and allowing Newcastle to get into a solid defensive shape.

With Bernard, Silva and Mahrez all dancing around the 10 spaces, Newcastle don’t really have a hold of anyone to mark. They’re still just waiting to counter-attack if they get any sort of chance to.

One-way traffic at Etihad Stadium
Man City are dominating this game, firing in a total of 15 shots compared to two from Newcastle so far.

58 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
GOAAAALLLLL but it’s cancelled out for offside. I’m not sure that actually is offside… but the free-kick from Walker was fired in as a surprise shot, punched away, headed back over and the Jesus found himself ahead of the Newcastle defence.
Jesus looks disappointed to be taken off for Bernardo.

57 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
DUMMETT SHOOTS ON THE VOLLEY! Wide. Nice effort though. Bernardo is about to come on for City. Sterling speeds round the outside of Yedlin – which is hard to do! – and wins a free-kick as the defender drags him to the floor.
Guardiola is giving Bernardo a heap of instructions as he stands ready to come on the pitch.

54 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Kenedy is subbed off for Atsu and trudges up the tunnel looking all sad. He wasn’t involved much but to be fair to him, it’s not as if many Newcastle players other than Rondon have been.

Kyle Walker has restored Man City’s lead and it’s now 2-1.

OOOOOH WHAT A HIT! KAPPOW! Walker lets fly from 30 yards and sends a rocket into the bottom corner!
BT Sport would have done well to animate a fire trail behind that one. Walker had that idea in his head the second he received the ball, using the sea of bodies as a shield to disguise the hit.

50 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Silva hits the wall, it bounces to Mahrez… and he blasts his shot miles over the bar.
It’s more of the same here as City try to work their way through two walls of defending players. 6:38pm
48 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Mahrez wins a free-kick on the edge of the area after beating one man already then going down a little easy under Clark’s challenge. Boooo.
Silva is lining up this free-kick.

What now? Goals please!

Time on ball (first half) 6:17pm
Average touch positions (half time)
City are too static in the final third, Newcastle are happy defending all game long and waiting for one chance to shoot and nothing much will change in the second half. Guardiola just has to get his men all fired up to win this one, they’re a bit flat at the moment.

45 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Mahrez teases the defence as he approaches the box, then curls into the area and Aguero sticks a foot out at it, nearly turning the ball past the goalkeeper!

43 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Dubravka is screaming at his defenders, properly roaring at them, as City hook a free-kick in from wide of the area. He clears the ball, Laporte can’t keep it in play and Newcastle have a goal kick.

41 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Mahrez’s first touch should be illegal. How do you even learn to kill a ball like that? The ball is dropping from the air, he’s got a defender charging at him and Mahrez fakes to punt it before taking the weight onto the sole of his foot and accelerating away from the spot.

39 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Rondon has really been excellent so far today. His holdup play is giving Newcastle an out whenever they get the chance to play the ball forward.
City’s forward players are a little static and without movement they’re not really creating too many opportunies. Mahrez has just bent a cross out for a goal kick.
37 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1

35 mins -( Man City 1 -1 Newcastle )
Fernandinho goes on a run, is fouled by Diame and then passes wide… the referee pulls play back for a free-kick slightly outside Beckham territory. Mahrez seems to fancy this one.
Nope, it’s Aguero – and he hits the wall.
Jesus wins a corner with some direct running into the box and a shot that deflects behind.

33 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 1
Will that mean Newcastle go back to defending? They’re having a lot more fun now with this more attacking 3-4-3 shape.
Mahrez wins a corner, Stones and Laporte come up for it… but Mahrez hits the Newcastle defender acting as a one man wall.

Newcastle level it up with a goal from DeAndre Yedlin: it’s 1-1.

Newcastle finally respond
The visitors finally have a shot – Man City had already fired in seven without reply.

NEWCASTLE ARE LEVEL! It’s a brilliant pass for the goal as well!
Kenedy controls in teh air – a magic touch – finds Rondon to his left and on the opposite wing Yedlin is running at about 300mph to into the back post on time. The pass is perfect and Yedlin blasts the shot into the back of the net. 1-1!

30 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
Newcastle have a free-kick wide left, the ball is chipped in and Ederson claims it superbly. He rolls out instantly, Silva finds Mendy, Mendy strides forward but a forward pass is easily blocked and Newcastle can counter. Perez ghosts past Silva but then is crowded out and the move breaks down.

28 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
Zonal marking from Newcastle at the near post and man marking towards the back, Silva crosses in and Jesus is totally free! He shoots with his head, the ball smashes off his face and bounces harmlessly into the goalkeeper’s hands.

26 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
Newcastle get into City’s half after Fernandinho tries to run through the middle of four midfield players… but soon enough, City have the ball again. And that leaves some space further up the pitch! Silva turns inside Diame and is caught by the sweeping leg on the edge of the area. Wide of goal so there won’t be a shot.

24 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
Dubravka gets the ball. Dubraka kicks the ball forward. City have the ball. Newcastle could do with keeping the thing for a while.

22 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
Corner to City. I’ve just realised I’m sitting here mesmerised by City’s passing rather than writing about it like I’m supposed to.

20 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0

18 mins – Man City 1-0 Newcastle

Newcastle have already changed their approach a little bit and are something of a 3-4-3 instead of 5-4-1 when in possession. That’s going to leave more space in the channels for City to attack.

Rondon controls a ball superbly on his chest, jumping high, staying strong and using balance to take the ball out the air. City win it back immediately.
Jesus is in! He dances around two centre-backs after running to the the through ball but his shot isn’t struck hard enough and is too close to the goalie’s hands.

16 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
AGUEROOOOOO just wide! Some more nice short sharp passing and Aguero has a go from 25 yards, putting the ball a wee bit wide of the far post.

Time on ball (0 – 15 min)

Man City enjoying plenty of touches of the ball so far.
Man City have had 147 touches of the ball compared to 57 by Newcastle.

14 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0
All City. There’s some nice football being played too.

12 mins – Man City 1 Newcastle 0

Kompany received this before the game, which is nice. Meanwhile, Guardiola’s effect is so powerful that Sergio Ageruo has just chased Yedlin down to win a corner!
I can see this being a bit of a hiding for Newcastle today. They don’t have that same desire and belief as last week and City are pulling them apart already.

An early opener from Raheem Sterling makes it 1-0 to Man City.

That’s how you do it! Raheem Sterling blasts City into the lead!
Sterling has heaps of space in behind the wing-back, Lascelles is too casual on the ball, there’s not the same bite and determination in the defending as we saw against Chelsea and Sterling has too much time. Diame gets back to double up, Sterling drops the shoulder and sells them both, then bends a beautiful shot into the far post.
6 mins – Man City 0 Newcastle 0
Mahrez has a chance to attack! It’s a mistake by Rondon at halfway, the ball is fired out to Mahrez on the right and he is in behind the wing-back! Mahrez comes inside and shoots low from inside the box but drags it wide.

Laporte goes into a 50/50 with Ki and catches his foot. Free-kick at halfway. City’s defensive line is about 40 yards from goal! Newcastle fans boo as the free-kick is sent back towards their own goalkeeper even though the centre-backs have gone forward.

4 mins – Man City 0 Newcastle 0
City playing with one pivot, and that man is a central defender. It’s a really attacking lineup for City today, as we’d expect.

Newcastle have everyone in their own half, City stretching and switching play. Ederson is playing about 30 yards out of his goal.
2 mins – Man City 0 Newcastle 0
Newcastle go on the attack from the start! But a high foot next to Silva’s head ends that. City start their attacking play and it does seem to be that sort of shape I was talking about a bit earlier, except Sterling
is wide left instead of right.

It’s time! Newcastle get the game started.

Team news
Man City v Newcastle (17:30 BST)
Pep Guardiola, a man who can make as many changes as he wishes it seems, makes three from the draw at Wolves last week.
In come John Stones, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus as Vincent Kompany, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva drop out.
City XI: Ederson, Walkes, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Mahrez, Silva, Sterling, Jesus, Aguero.

Ayoze Perez earns a starting place thanks to his goal in the defeat to Chelsea last weekend and he is one of three changes. Kenedy also comes back in bust most eye-catching is the inclusion of Jamaal Lascelles.

He’s captain again. Remember all the talk of a ‘bust up’ with Rafa Benitez a week ago. Seems it was a storm in a teacup. Fabian Schar, Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy make way for the three new faces.

Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Yedlin, Lascelles, Fernandes, Clark, Dummett, Ki, Diame, Kenedy, Perez, Rondon.
